FOR SALE: Great-minded, Quiet, Kind Gelding

Hickorys Royal Rey
AQHA 2005 blood bay gelding

Quiet. Good minded. Started with Ray Hunt.

Kind, willing gelding. Ready to take in whatever direction you choose. Quiet enough for a novice/beginner with direction; soft and refined enough for an experienced rider to really enjoy.

Chili is a beautiful, blood bay with black points. Long, thick cowhorse mane & tail. Ruggedly handsome. Stands 15h measured.

Bred in the purple. Doc Olena & Peponita on papers. Many other greats: Docs Hickory, Doc Bar, Peppy San, Poco Bueno, Sonny Dee Bar.

Excellent ground manners. Clips, bathes, vacuums. Stands tied all day. Saddles & bridles quietly. Very respectful of handler space. No vices.

Big bright walk. Ground covering trot. Rocking horse canter.

Rates well at all three gaits. A joy to lope across an open field.

Professionally trained. Great mind. Works off a loose rein. Currently works lightly in a snaffle two-handed. Responds to seat and leg aids. Very soft mouth. Starting to neck rein with direction.

Pivots on front and hind, side passes. Continues to learn collection and giving to the bit. Ridden outside the arena 90% of the time.

Loves to trail ride. Hauled & ridden extensively in Montana, Idaho, Wyoming in July-August 2007. Spent 5 days at Eminence, MO for the "Cross Country Trail Ride" in the Ozarks in October 2007. Overnights well. Trailers like a seasoned rodeo horse.

Very confident & willing for long rides, rocky climbs, uneven terrain, & chest high river crossings. Rides well alone or with a group. Good with wildlife: deer & wild turkeys.

Started on cattle. Very quiet, shows interest, and waits for direction. Good with swinging ropes. Ridden with cattle dogs at all times.

Safe. Sane. Sound.

For consideration to a good home only

John Parks Ranch Partnership

There are a lot of people who enjoy horses, few who study horses, and fewer still who really understand and compliment horses. John has got greater drive to find better understanding, timing, and delivery than any horseman I've ever seen. He wants it, and he works for it.

John has spent years studying horsemen Ray Hunt and Tom and Bill Dorrance. He has also spent a considerable amount of time riding with Jeff Griffith and Buck Brannaman. Several months of the year, he divides time between Montana, Wyoming, and Idaho for "cowboying". The remainder of the time he lives on a 60 acre horse ranch in Iowa. With a little rope work, cow work, ranching, and a lot of patience and tuning- he creates a partnership with his horses and the results are remarkable. John Parks lives horses.
John and I decided to partner in May 2007. It's a little bit of a collision of two worlds: his knowledge of ranch work, roping, and the making of a hackamore and bridle horse combined with my experience in horsemanship, equitation, and competition/coaching.
The outcome is an amazing exchange of ideas and training techniques.
The results are evident in the quality of our horses.

Cross Country Trail Riding 2006

After relocating to Iowa in summer 2006, I had the great fortune to meet fellow equestrian Astrid Smith. New to the area and without a horse for the first time in about 15 years, Astrid lent me her 16.2h powerhouse all summer.

Astrid is an avid cross country rider. Whether galloping through fields, hacking out at a nice extended trot, riding through waist deep river currents, or sharing wine, cheese, and strawberries after a 10-20 mile ride... Astrid reminds me of the reason why people love horses: because they are good for your soul.

Stanton Stables Collaboration

As the University of Illinois Equestrian Team Coach, I collaborated with Stanton Stables http://www.stantonstables.com/ to teach lessons from 2003-2005. Stanton Stables at the time stood the leading APHA Sire Zippin and ran a therapeutic riding program.

Bonnie Stanton is the strongest business woman that I have ever met. I owe a lot of my perfectionism, interpersonal business skills, and desire to be a professional in the horse world to her. As their head riding instructor, over the course of 2 years, I taught over 100 regular students from pre-school through retirement age.

I received the greatest education from my lesson horses who literally had been searched out and found from all over the United States. My lesson horses had some amazing resumes: hundreds of breed association points and championships, former medalist jumpers, and even a Reserve Champion Western Pleasure Congress winner. My co-workers were trustworthy and talented. I literally watched them work for hundreds of hours. They taught me more about horse movement, balance, and the physics of ridings and instructing than I thought possible. Thank you to my lesson horses who were the best teachers I've ever had: Dewey, Kitty, Boots, Dixie, Foxy, Kayti, Toes, Dice, Zena, Annie, Benny, Merlin, Minnie, Luke.
